Course Description :

This course is designed to investigate the most recent findings in the area of physiological psychology. Topics of study will concern basic information about the nervous system, sensory systems, physiological bases of behaviors, and the development of learning and memory.

Rationale :

This course is intended to introduce the student to the scientific discipline of psychophysiology, the study of the brain, physiological processes, psychopharmacology, and behavior.

Measurable Learning Outcomes :

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

    1. Apply fundamental research skills per current APA style and formatting.
    2. Apply the ethical principles that guide research in the area of neuropsychology.
    3. Explain the physiological dynamics influencing the major mental health disorders.
    4. Describe the research techniques most often used in neuropsychological research.
    5. Identify the parts of the central nervous system and their functioning.
    6. Explain the neuron and its purpose within the nervous system.
    7. Compare the biblical view of the creation of man to the evolutionary view.
    8. Discuss how the sensory and motor neurons work together to facilitate functionality for the human being.
    9. Identify the major parts of the brain and their purposes.

Discussions (3) :

There will be 3 Discussions throughout this course. The purpose of the Discussions is to generate interaction among students in regard to relevant and current course topics. The student is required to submit 1 thread of at least 250 words, and then to submit replies of at least 100 words each to the threads of 2 classmates. For each thread, the student must support his or her assertions with at least 2 citations in the current APA format.

Using a template provided, students will show the progression of topic selection to purpose statement to basic outline. After completing this process, students will use the information to create an APA-formatted document with a title page,  purpose statement, and a reference list with at least 8 journal articles (that meet the specified criteria). The completed Research Paper: Topic and Outline Development template will be included after your references as an Appendix.

Students will respond to five questions/scenarios related to memory loss. Answers will be typed on the Memory Loss Activity Assignment worksheet template and submitted.

Research Paper: Final Paper Assignment :

The Research Paper: Final Paper Assignment is the capstone assignment for this course and is to be a written representation of the research conducted on the psychophysiological aspects of an issue chosen from the textbook. Using the services of Liberty University’s Online Library, the student will select and read at least 8 recent journal articles on the chosen issue. The student will then summarize his or her findings in an 8–10-page paper, written in the current APA style, and submitted through SafeAssign.

All Quizzes (4) :

The student will complete 4 quizzes throughout this course. Each exam is open-book/open-notes, has 40 multiple-choice questions, and has a time limit of 1 hour and 30 minutes. The student may take each quiz up to 3 times, and only the highest grade of the 3 attempts will be recorded.
