Course Description

An enhancement and development of the exposure to Hebrew word formation, the verbal system, and syntax. Emphasis is placed on developing skills for the use of various linguistic helps in performing Hebrew language word studies (semantic range studies and semantic domain studies). The pragmatic use of Hebrew for Bible exposition is emphasized.

Rationale

The purpose of this course is to develop the student’s facility to translate and interpret the Hebrew Bible for use in personal study, theological reflection, and sermon preparation.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Define select Hebrew vocabulary words.
2. Employ Hebrew language tools in the analysis of a Hebrew text.
3. Exegete is an Old Testament passage with awareness of the significant features of the Hebrew text.
4. Distinguish between the Perfect form of the Hebrew verb and the Imperfect form of the Hebrew verb.
5. Assess the data in Old Testament exegetical commentaries based upon the features of the Hebrew text.

Quizzes: Vocabulary (8)

The student will complete eight weekly vocabulary quizzes, based on the provided weekly vocabulary lists.  Since vocabulary is vital to the student’s success, these quizzes ensure core learning is taking place.  (MLOs: A, B, C, D, E, F)

Quizzes: Textbook and Translation (4)

The student will complete 4 open-book/open-note quizzes. The quizzes will have a 30-minute time limit and will consist of 10-12 true/false, multiple-choice, and fill-in-the-blank questions based on the reading from the textbook.  These quizzes will also contain 4-5 clauses/sentences for translation based on the vocabulary up to that point in the course.  (MLOs: B, D, F)

Discussions: Threads and Replies (2)

Discussion is a collaborative learning experience. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided promptly for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 400 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 200 words. (MLOs: B, D)

Word Study Assignments (2)

The student will write two-word studies in the current Turabian format that focus on the prompts provided in the course. All external sources must be footnoted in the current Turabian format. (MLOs: B, D)

The first-word study will be an analysis of the first word of the first psalm in our Bible based upon the Word Study Process discussed in Chapter 5 of Dr. Roden’s book.  Complete a Word Study of at least 600 words. Complete the study using the steps in Chapter 5 as headings for your paper and type each heading in bold letters.

The second-word study will expand to an analysis of the phrase “the fear of the LORD” limiting the study to the first two chapters of the book of Proverbs based upon the Word Study Process discussed in Chapter 5 of Dr. Roden’s book.  Complete a Phrase Study of at least 600 words. Use the steps in Chapter 5 of his book as headings for your paper and type each heading in bold letters.   The context will play a very important place in discovering what Solomon meant by this phrase.  This study is broader than a single-word study.

Exegetical Paper Assignment

The student will write one research-based exegetical paper in the current Turabian format on the provided passage. The paper is to be 4–5 pages. The paper must include a word study of a significant Hebrew word in the verse.  The paper must include at least 4 external sources in addition to the assigned readings and the Bible. All external sources must be footnoted in the current Turabian format. (MLOs: A, B, C, D)
