Rationale
This course seeks to enable students to understand and properly communicate God’s Word, which is a foundational function of ministry. One goal of the John W. Rawlings School of Divinity is “to develop cognitive skills for ministry and scholarship through rigorous interaction with the biblical text…” This course will help the student further develop these skills through the study of biblical exegetical methods and the application of these methods to the book of Galatians in the Greek New Testament.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Apply proper syntactical and exegetical principles.
- Evaluate various interpretations of the text.
- Interpret the critical apparatus of the Greek New Testament.
- Develop exegetical findings into teaching and preaching content.
- Develop an in-depth exegetical study of a select portion of the book.

The student will complete 3 Discussions in this course. The student will post one thread by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday of the assigned Module: Week. The student must then post two replies by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of the assigned Module: Week. For each thread, students must support their assertions with scholarly citations in the current Turabian format. Each reply must incorporate scholarly citations in the current Turabian format. Acceptable sources include current “scholarly” sources published in the past 5 years. (MLOs: A, B, C, D, E)
Quizzes (3)
Each quiz will cover the Reading & Study material for the Module: Week in which it is assigned as well as all previously assigned Reading & Study material. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 25 multiple-choice and/or true/false questions, and have a 45-minute time limit. (MLOs: A, B, C, D, E)
Word Study Assignment
The student must write a 900–1,100-word research-based paper in the current Turabian format that focuses on 1 or 2 Greek word(s) from Galatians selected by the student. The paper must include at least 2 scholarly references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. (MLOs: A, B, C, D, E)
Phrase Diagramming Assignment
The student will be required to produce a phrase diagram of Galatians 3:19–29. It is not essential that a student cite scholarly sources, but the student must be familiar with and use conventional syntactical terminology. (MLOs: A, B, C, D, E)
Exegetical Paper Assignment
The student must write a 1,500–2,000-word research-based paper in the current Turabian format that focuses on an exegetical analysis of Galatians 3:19–29. The paper must include at least 3 scholarly references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. (MLOs: A, B, C, D, E)
Application Paper Assignment
The student must write a 1,000–1,400-word research-based paper in the current Turabian format that focuses on the practical application of Galatians 3:19–29. The paper must include at least 3 scholarly references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. (MLOs: A, B, C, D, E)
