Course Description:

The course is designed to assist students in understanding how to pay for college, manage money, and maintain financial responsibility. Students will learn applicable skills such as, how to budget and plan for current and future financial needs. For information regarding prerequisites for this course, please refer to the Academic Course Catalog.


FNLT 101 provides information relating to college life and preparation/tools for personal finance, as well as biblical stewardship. Because it is vital for students to learn how to manage money as guided by Scripture, particularly in today’s global economy, FNLT 101 is an ideal choice.

Measurable Learning Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate the ability to create a personal financial plan that reflects biblically based convictions about finances.
  • Demonstrate proficient knowledge and applied to understand the 4H model for financial decision making.
  • Analyze current debt, spending, giving, and saving situations and set SMART goals in at least two of these four areas.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of compound interest, as it relates to both debt and savings, and its effect on long-term financial constraints and capabilities

  • Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will create a thread in response to the provided promptly for each discussion.
  • Each thread’s main post must be at least 250 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge.
  • In addition to the thread main post, the student will reply to the threads of at least 2 classmates.
  • Each reply must be at least 100 words. At least 1 citation (from the text or scripture) must be included in each thread’s main post.
  • Current APA formatting is required for any citations.

To reinforce the material learned in each module, the student will complete 7 assignments involving written elements of financial literacy.

Four Hs of Financial Wisdom: Pre-Course Financial Goals Assignment
This assignment will provide the student with a benchmark of where the student is currently to review at the end of this course to consider if any of the “Four H” elements shift while working through the content.
Interview or Sermon Write-Up: Heart Assignment
  • This assignment is designed to encourage the student to interview someone the student respects as a financial steward to hear about their “why”.
  • If the student does not know of someone to interview or does not have access to the interview, there is a sermon provided to read with questions to address in the summation of the sermon.
  • Either option is accepted for this assignment.
Personal Reflections: Health and Habits Assignment
The student will begin working on the Personal Financial Plan by completing the “Health and Habits” section of the document.
Debt Snowball Simulation & Pay Stub Analysis: Owe Assignment
For this assignment, the student will create a debt snowball and analyze a pay stub for a fictional student.
Live Wedge: Budgeting Assignment
The student will complete four exercises provided in a document with the assignment.
Balance the Budget: Budgeting Assignment
  • This project will require the student to categorize approximately 50 sample transactions for a hypothetical month of spending and income.
  • The spending summary will show that more money has been spent than earned. 
  • As a result, the student will need to craft a zero-based budget “fixing” the overspending for the “next month.”

Personal Financial Plan: Final Project Assignment

The student will complete the Personal Financial Plan which was started earlier in the course.

The student will complete 6 quizzes which will cover all the material assigned in the Learn sections of the textbook. These quizzes will be open-book/open-notes, contain a variety of multiple-choice and true/false questions, and have a time limit of 2 hours.
