Course Description
Designed to increase the understanding of the American legal system and those legal principles which apply to the business environment. Business organizations, torts, contracts, employment relationships and issues, intellectual property, and international law are among the topics discussed.

Rationale
The purpose of this course is to assist the student in identifying the legal issues associated with business operations so that he or she may effectively respond and seek competent legal counsel.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Recognize ethical/legal dilemmas faced by businesses.
- Compare the basic elements of the American legal system, federal and state court systems, and alternatives to litigation.
- Differentiate among basic business legal entities and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
- Describe the basic elements of a contract, identify possible contract defenses, and propose contract remedies in hypothetical fact patterns.
- Examine major areas for litigation in employment law.
- Recognize basic legal issues facing a business operating internationally in the global economy.
- Analyze all the preceding in light of the teachings and principles in the Holy Scriptures.
Course Assignment
Readings are presented through SmartBook adaptive learning technology. The student will respond to questions throughout the reading and receive points for correct completion.
Before working through the checklist outlined in the Course Overview, the student should review the Liberty University curriculum.
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. The student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 100 words. For each thread and each reply, the student must support conclusions with at least 2 sources cited in the current APA format. All written work also requires Biblical worldview integration.
The student will read the book Business for the Glory of God. After reading the book, the student will write a 1,000-word paper reflecting on the information contained in the book, connecting it to information found in the course. A bibliography containing at least 3 sources other than the reviewed text, cited in the current APA format, must be included.
The student will complete two interactive application-based analyses in Connect, which will assess the student’s understanding of key legal topics.
The student will complete 3 quizzes through Connect. All quizzes are open-book/open-notes, but the student may not receive help from another person while taking the quiz. The quiz questions will be multiple-choice or true/false.
An optional ungraded practice quiz is also available before each graded quiz.
