Course Description

Theories, procedures, and equipment applicable to the delivery of respiratory therapy in pediatric care (outside of the neonatal period).

Rationale

Pediatric respiratory care is a subspecialty pathway for respiratory therapists. Whether pediatric respiratory care is a chosen pathway or not, the respiratory therapist within hospitals, schools, home care, emergency rooms, or during emergency transport may be relied upon to take care of the cardiopulmonary needs of children with skills and knowledge. This course will prepare the respiratory therapist to successfully pass the pediatric components of the NBRC exam and to manage common pediatric cardiopulmonary diseases in practice.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Evaluate the physical and physiologic assessment of pediatric patients and create proper treatment plans.
2. Describe the etiologies, clinical signs, and therapeutic measures for various pediatric diseases.
3. Evaluate the ventilator management of a pediatric patient and, based on the underlying disease process, create appropriate interventions.
4. Analyze differences in various types of therapy and ventilation strategies used in the management of pediatric patients.
5. Recognize common pediatric respiratory disorders presentations, and diagnoses, and develop appropriate treatment strategies.

1. Comprehend, apply, and evaluate clinical information relevant to their roles as registered respiratory therapists (cognitive domain).

3. Demonstrate professional behavior consistent with clinical rotation site expectations as a registered respiratory therapist (affective domain).
4. Utilize critical thinking/problem-solving skills to develop the best patient treatment for those suffering from cardiopulmonary disease.
5. Integrate the biblical worldview into all aspects of respiratory therapy.

Mechanical Ventilation Virtual Simulator Assignment

A mechanical ventilation simulator is available free of charge by OPENPediatrics. The student must go to www.openpediatric.org and create an account as a healthcare professional and respiratory therapist. The student must then search for simulators, choose a mechanical ventilator simulator, and complete the knowledge guide, tactics, and cases. The score received on the completed cases will determine the student’s grade for this assignment. The student must save his/her completion certificate and upload it to the provided submission link. The student can complete the cases as often as he/she would like to improve his/her score.

There will be 2 quizzes in this course: a midterm and a final. Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned Modules: Weeks. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 50–60 multiple-choice questions, and have a 90-minute time limit that must be completed in one sitting.
