Course Summary :

Social psychology is the study of how the presence of other people affects individuals’ effects, behavior, and cognition as well as how individuals form opinions and attitudes about other people. Topics in the course include, for example, functions of the self, theory of cognitive dissonance, attitude and attitude change, conformity, group processes, interpersonal attraction, prosocial behavior, aggression, and prejudice.

For information regarding prerequisites for this course, please refer to the Academic Course Catalog.

Rationale :

Many individuals go through their daily routines with little thought as to what influences their own thoughts and behaviors, as well as the behavior of those around them. They seem unaware of how other people influence their thoughts and behavior. Still, others attempt to understand and explain their behavior, but their explanations are inaccurate.

This course will seek to explain how students’ thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by the actual or imagined presence of others so that the students can better understand themselves and those around them.
