Course Detail :

An examination of the definition, neurobiology, etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of sexual addiction. Students will explore, from a biblical worldview, gender issues related to sexual addiction and related topics such as marital affairs, pornography, and homosexuality. Rationale :

Sexual addiction is an increasing problem found in the modern Christian community. Counselors and pastors need a biblical and clinical foundation to adequately understand the etiology and contributing factors to this addiction, recognize its clinical course and develop effective counseling strategies for addressing this addiction.

 

Measurable Learning Outcomes :

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Define and describe sexual addiction including its etiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. This outcome will be measured by Discussions, the Course Concepts PowerPoint Presentation, and tests.
  2. Compare and contrast male and female sexual addiction. This outcome will be measured by the Discussions and tests
  3. Develop and integrate a biblical approach to counseling with sexual addiction populations. This outcome will be measured by the Discussions, tests, and Course Concepts PowerPoint Presentation.
  4. Analyze and synthesize current research on topics related to sexual addiction. This outcome will be measured by the Course Concepts Presentation and the Research Paper.
  5. Explore one’s personal and professional reactions to sexual addiction. This outcome will be measured by Discussions.
  6. Describe community resources available for sexual addiction. This outcome will be measured by the Resource Paper (or PowerPoint Presentation or Pamphlet)

Discussions (4) :

These Discussions are designed to allow the student to interact with the presentations. Each Discussion must include a 200–250-word thread and at least one 100–150-word reply to either a fellow student or a question posed by the instructor. Also, each Discussion must reflect at least 1 reference to the source of the student’s opinion, cited in the current APA format. (Learning Outcomes A, B, C)

Resource Project Assignment :

The student will complete one of the following:

  1. 3-4 page paper in APA format
  2. PowerPoint Presentation with a script for each slide
  3. Pamphlet (in Word or Publisher)

The purpose of this project is to assist the student in becoming familiar with the various 12-step programs that are available to clients in his/her recovery. (Learning Outcome F)

 

Course Concepts PowerPoint Presentation Assignment :

The purpose of this assignment is to encourage the student to explore more deeply a topic covered in the course. The student will choose a topic from the provided list and construct a PowerPoint presentation of at least 10 content slides. to explain the topic more thoroughly. The presentation must contain at least 3 references from the course material and/or outside sources. (Learning Outcomes A, C, D)

Research Paper Assignment :

The student will choose and review a topic relevant to sexual addictions and complete a 6–8-page paper in the current APA format. The student may choose the topics from the list provided or email the instructor for approval of another topic before beginning. Topics must be related to sexual addiction and may include: pornography, the internet, prostitution, trauma, the family of origin, treatment modalities, religious beliefs, dual diagnosis, sexual abuse, power, and control, etc.

The paper must include at least 5 outside sources (not including the textbooks), that are from current professional journals (published within the last 5 years). (Learning Outcome D)

Overall Quizzes (4) :

The student will take 4 quizzes over the previous week’s readings and video presentations. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 25 multiple-choice questions, and have a 50-minute time limit. (Learning Outcomes A, B, C)
