Course Description
An introduction to the biblical Hebrew alphabet, word formation, the verbal system, and syntax. Emphasis is placed on developing skills in the use of concordances and lexicons, as well as the use of various linguistic bits of help and differing English translations.

Rationale
God first chose to reveal himself to, and call, a people group who ultimately spoke the Hebrew language. Thus, it is important for God’s people today to understand the vehicle through which God revealed himself and spoke. This course is the most elementary introduction to that language.
Measurable Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Write the biblical Hebrew alphabet, both consonants, and vowels, in square script.
- Identify the lexical forms, prefixes, and suffixes of Biblical Hebrew nouns.
- Distinguish the various verbal stems and some inflections of the Hebrew verbal system.
- Employ various tools for the translation of biblical Hebrew words and simple sentences.
- Create word studies for a Hebrew noun and a verb.
- Identify the rationale for using biblical Hebrew in preaching.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided promptly for each forum. Each thread must be at least 300 words. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 150 words. (MLO: F)

The student will complete 4 Learning Exercises which are open-book/open-note exercises. These exercises will vary in nature and will advance the student’s learning of various components of the Hebrew language. (MLOs: A, B, C, D, E, F)
Vocabulary Flashcards Assignments (6)
The student will complete 6 Vocabulary Flashcards Assignments. Since vocabulary is vital to the student’s success, these flashcards ensure core learning is taking place. (MLOs: A, B, C, D, E, F)
Word Study Assignments (2)
The student will complete 2 Hebrew Word Studies following the textbook instructions. The first study, which must be at least 600 words, is on a Hebrew noun. The second study, which must be at least 900 words, is on a Hebrew verb. The student must use 4 resources cited in the current Turabian format for each Word Study. (MLOs: D, E)
Quizzes (11)
The student will complete 11 open-book/open-note quizzes. The quizzes are based on the readings and learning from the textbook, Elementary Biblical Hebrew. There is a Quiz: Mid-term and a Quiz: Final, both of which cover the learning from several modules. Quiz: Mid-term will cover chapters 1-4 of the textbook. Quiz: Final will cover chapters 5-8.
The foci of these two quizzes will be heavy upon vocabulary and translations but will contain true/false, multiple-choice, matching, fill-in-the-blank, and short answer questions gleaned from the readings, presentations, and vocabulary words of those respective modules. The other 9 quizzes are weekly-type quizzes focusing on learning and reading from the respective modules in which they are assigned. These 9 quizzes are objective quizzes consisting of mostly matching, true/false, and multiple choice questions. (MLOs: A, B, C, D, F)
