Course Explaining:

This course is the initial step for students and faculty to actualize the student’s research project. It provides a focused study of the problem, purpose, significance, theoretical framework, biblical integration, and important literature relevant to the proposed project. Students will prepare and defend their doctoral dissertation proposal during this course.


Under the direction of a dissertation chair, the Ph.D. candidate writes a dissertation proposal in alignment with the most current Dissertation Handbook. The development of the proposal is in preparation for the dissertation proposal defense, which is the culminating assignment for this course. Measurable Learning Findings:

Upon successful completion of this course, the candidate will be able to:

  1. Describe primary elements of the Dissertation Handbook.
  2. Describe the primary steps of the dissertation process.
  3. Develop a timeline for the completion of the dissertation process.
  4. Produce a completed dissertation proposal.
  5. Complete a dissertation proposal defense with the committee.

Discussion Board Forums (4)

Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will post progress report updates in the Discussion Board Forum, describing his or her dissertation proposal development goals. Using a minimum of 100 words, the student will describe his or her goals in detail in regard to the specific sections of each chapter he or she intends to address. In addition to the thread, the student will reply to 2 other classmates’ threads.

Proposal Submission Assignments (4)

The student will complete 4 dissertation proposal submissions during the course in order to demonstrate measurable progress. The dissertation proposal will be submitted in Blackboard and may be reviewed by the chair for improvement over previous drafts. The chair will assign a pass/no pass grade for the submission.

Dissertation Proposal Progress Measurement Rubric

At the conclusion of the course, the student will use the NURS 987 Progress Measurement Rubric to reflect on his or her progress this term. The student will highlight the category that he or she feels reflects his or her performance in this class across the term. The student’s chair will review and add his/her assessment using tracked changes/comments.

Total No. of Quizzes (16)

Each quiz will cover the student’s progress for the assigned modules/weeks. Each quiz will contain 1 true/false question and have a 30-minute time limit.
