Rationale:

1. Issues in Global Health are presented to DNP students within a background of a shrinking world system. Issues that only affected remote parts of the world 20 years ago are now affecting all areas of the globe.
2. Doctoral students must understand the impact of culture and health care delivery on populations other than their own.
3. A knowledge of conditions seen in Low Income, Middle Income, and High-Income countries where poverty and differing belief systems impact health is necessary for leadership in an ever-widening scope of practice.
4. With the destabilization of populations that migrate and take refuge from war and geo-political unrest, come problems involving infrastructure to support health and well-being.
5. Food and clean water shortages coupled with stress predispose aggregates to diseases that stable societies do not experience.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

• Integrate essential components of cultural intelligence into strategies to develop inter-professional collaboration with global health care providers aiming to improve health care delivery to patients, families, and populations across the lifespan. Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided promptly for each Discussion. Each thread must have quality evidence-based information and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each post and reply must cite 2 peer-reviewed publications. (MLO: A, B, C, F; PLO: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7)

Discussion: Individual Presentation PowerPoint Assignment

1. The student will create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation based on the selected topic and discuss the role of an APN.
2. There must be 10 – 12 slides with notes provided for each slide, not including the title and the reference slide.
3. The presentation must be supported by at least 4 scholarly sources published within the last 5 years.
4. The student will upload a Video Discussion to the class as information dissemination for each student to review and respond with a positive comment.
5. The PowerPoint will be graded per the Rubrics guidelines. (MLO: B; PLO 1, 2, 6)

Chronic Illness and Malnutrition Presentation Assignment

Students will prepare a PowerPoint Presentation (4 – 5 slides excluding the title and reference slides) to lead a short MS Teams discussion according to the assigned topic from the module: week requirements. Each student will be provided 5 minutes to present their slides. An additional 2 – 3 minutes may be used to answer questions. Further discussion can take place as time permits. At least 2 peer-reviewed or evidence-based references should be utilized in the presentation. The assignment will be submitted by Sunday of the module: week for grading. (MLO: B; PLO: 1, 2, 6)

Debate Assignment:

Students will select a topic of global importance in relation to disaster and environmental health, examine the pros and cons, and debate during the synchronized session based on the guidelines. Students will be graded based on the rubric provided. The group assignment will be submitted by Sunday of the module for grading. Your team will be graded based on the rubric. The team leads with submit the final product to the assignment link. Each member of the team will receive the same grade. (MLO: C, D, F; PLO: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)

Policy Critique Paper Assignment

The student will select a health care policy or an emergency management policy of a country critique. This paper must be 4 – 6 pages long, written in current APA format, (excluding the title page and reference page), and have at least 3 peer-reviewed references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. (MLO: D; PLO: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6)

Global Health Paper Assignment

The student will write a 10-page paper (not including a cover page or reference list), citing at least 7 peer-reviewed journal articles published within the previous 5 years in addition to the textbook and the Bible. The paper will address one of the following global problems (topics can be selected on a first come-first serve basis).

• Violence against women.
• Impact of forced population displacement on health.
• Global childhood malnutrition.
• The challenges of international nurse migration: seeking global solutions.
• Complex issues in conflict areas.
• End of life care in a global health context.
• Natural Disasters and global health

The paper will address the magnitude of the problem. The role of advanced practice nursing to educate on the topic and collaborate with other disciplines will be addressed. The paper will explore what is currently being achieved and what is currently absent in the quest to solve the problem(s). Ethical issues such as human rights and social justice will be addressed from a biblical perspective. Utilizing the U.N. Millennium Development Goals and the U.S. IOM and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative, the paper will develop a collaborative system to intervene in one of the topics above.
