Course Brief Overview:

This course focuses on the development of body systems appetite each to health assessment of individuals emphasizing normal growth and developmental responses across the lifespan. Content includes an introduction to the knowledge and skills of health assessment through a variety of methodologies in the classroom, opportunities to practice skills in the nursing lab, laboratory, and experiences in clinical settings. Students apply communication techniques in eliciting comprehensive health histories and perform physical examinations in evaluating health status. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Assess body systems using the four modalities of the physical examination: inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation in proper sequence, using proper technique, in order to identify normal and abnormal findings.
2. Utilize his or her interviewing skills regarding health assessment data collection by employing effective communication, interpretation of objective and subjective data, and appropriate documentation.
3. Describe how technology has changed the physical assessment process over time.
4. Demonstrate the use of current assessment equipment and assessment verification options.
5. Summarize legal responsibilities related to the physical assessment, including how to identify and locate appropriate patient referral contacts for issues that arise outside of the nursing scope of practice.
6. Evaluate the interactions among health, economic, social, and political status, as well as cultural differences, and the impact each one can have on health care.
7. Integrate an attitude of caring in client/nurse relationships while incorporating behaviors related to a Christian value system in the provision of nursing care.

Assessment Video Assignments (3)

Students will demonstrate the skills and knowledge necessary to perform a comprehensive physical assessment for an adult client by recording and submitting three Assessment Video Assignments, each of which includes a portion of a comprehensive assessment, throughout the term. A summative, comprehensive assessment video will be required at the end of the term. During each video, students will demonstrate psychomotor (hands-on) skills while verbalizing assessment findings using accurate medical terminology. Additionally, students will be required to utilize nursing equipment (such as an otoscope and tuning forks) as listed in the course syllabus and online bookstore.

Credit will not be given for portions requiring special equipment if students choose not to use the required equipment.

Assessment Video Assignments are clinical components of the course. Satisfactory completion with a minimum 70% score on each clinical component (i.e. the content portion of each video) is required to earn a passing grade for the course.

• Students are required to film and submit a video of a Comprehensive Physical Exam (head-to-toe assessment) of a consenting adult age 18 or older. During the video, students will demonstrate psychomotor (hands-on) skills while verbalizing assessment findings using accurate medical terminology.
