Rationale

The primary mission of Liberty University School of Divinity is to train persons for ministry. This course seeks to enable students to understand and communicate properly God’s Word, which is a foundational function for ministry. One goal of Liberty University School of Divinity is “to develop cognitive skills for ministry and scholarship through rigorous interaction with the biblical text…” This course advances the “rigorous interaction” with the Greek New Testament that was begun in NGRK 520, 525, and 620.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Analyze major questions and issues of Greek syntax and grammar.
2. Examine major approaches to key grammatical and syntactical issues through critical analysis.
3. Examine the application of linguistics and discourse analysis to the Greek New Testament.
4. Apply advanced grammatical, syntactical, and linguistic analysis to the text of the Greek New Testament.

Course Assignment

After reading the Course Syllabus at Liberty University, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided promptly for each Discussion. Each thread must be 500 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 250 words. (MLOs: A, B, C, D)

The student will select a word from the passage chosen in the Quiz: Passage Selection and perform a lexical analysis. The assignment should follow the steps indicated in the instructions in addition to interacting with lexical aids and other sources which may enrich the examination of the term (e.g., commentaries, monographs, peer-reviewed essays, etc.)

The student will examine the verbal forms (verbs, participles, and infinitives) from the passage chosen in the Quiz: Passage Selection and perform an aspectual analysis. The assignment should follow the steps described in the assignment instructions, interacting with grammatical resources in addition to other sources which may enrich the examination of the verbal forms (e.g., commentaries, monographs, peer-reviewed essays, etc.)

The student will conduct a discourse analysis of the passage chosen in the Quiz: Passage Selection. The assignment should follow the steps outlined in the instructions, interacting with grammatical resources and other sources which may enrich the examination of the verbal forms (e.g., commentaries, monographs, peer-reviewed essays, etc.)

The student will choose a passage of at least 6-8 verses in the Greek New Testament, though some may be longer. This selection will be utilized in several discussions as well as in the Lexical Analysis Assignment, Aspectual Analysis Assignment, and Discourse Analysis Assignment. The professor may recommend modifications to the selection after it is submitted.
