Rationale
A 600-level elective on The Use of the Old Testament in the New Testament would be a valuable addition to the graduate-level courses in the divinity school. The study of the OT in the NT is currently a topic of intense interest and controversy in the discipline of biblical studies. Understanding the issues involved in this study is essential for the interpretation of hundreds of passages in the NT that use or reference the OT in some way.
Study of this topic will also enable the student to better understand the unity of the OT and NT and how the two are related to each other, as well as how to read the OT theologically and how to assess the hermeneutical practices of the NT writers, specifically their Christological usage of OT texts. The study of the OT in the NT better prepares pastors to preach and teach the OT from a Christian perspective in the church. This course will also provide the master’s level student with the option of taking this course as an NBST or OBST elective.
