Course Description

An expository treatment of the epistles to Timothy and Titus, emphasizes the responsibilities of church leaders as stewards in God’s household. Attention is given to such introductory matters as date, authorship, occasion, and purpose.

Rationale

The Pastoral Epistles contain valuable instruction pertaining to the doctrine of the church and discuss several practical matters relating to Gospel ministry. It is important that the student be aware of the key theological contributions of the Pastorals as well the debates surrounding their background and authorship.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify the major issues regarding the interpretation of the Pastoral Epistles.
2. Articulate the major theological themes of the Pastoral Epistles.
3. Discuss issues related to the difficult passages/ideas in the Pastoral Epistles.
4. Describe the social, political, and religious context of the Pastoral Epistles.
5. Apply the teaching of the Pastoral Epistles to the contemporary church.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided promptly for each discussion. Book Critique Assignment

The student will be required to write a book critique of Entrusted with the Gospel (Köstenberger and Wilder, eds.). The critique will have two sections: summaries of ten of the chapters and a critical analysis of two chapters.  (MLOs: A, B, D, E)

Research Paper Assignment

The student will write a thesis-based research paper. The paper will investigate one of the approved topics related to the Pastoral Epistles. (MLOs: A, C, D)

Quizzes (4)

Each quiz will cover the reading and study material for two modules. Quizzes will be open-book/open-notes; contain 30 multiple-choice, true/false, and/or short answer questions; and have a 1-hour time limit.  (MLOs: A, B, D)
