Course Description

An expositional study of the two letters of Paul to Corinth. Special attention is directed to discovering the major doctrinal themes developed by Paul and how these are applied to the numerous personal and institutional problems of the first-century Gentile church.

Rationale

First and Second Corinthians contains some of Paul’s most extensive instructions relating to life in the local church as well as some of his most detailed treatment of several foundational Christian doctrines such as the resurrection. It is important that students be aware of the key theological contributions of the Corinthians as well as the many issues, problems, and areas of concern that have faced Christian scholars in the study of these epistles.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. 1. Identify the key themes addressed in Corinthians.
   2. Discuss the problems of the church at Corinth.
   3. Evaluate the discussions of additional letters of Paul to Corinth.
   4. Identify and examine key passages of the letters to Corinth.
   5. Explain the historical context and background of Paul’s letters to the Corinthian church.

Discussions (3)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided promptly for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 400 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 classmates’ threads. Book Reflection Paper Assignment

The student will write an 1800–2400-word reflection paper in current Turabian format that discusses insights learned from the book A Week in the Life of Corinth. The objective of this assignment is not to summarize the book’s content. Rather, the student is to share what he/she has learned from the book regarding the society of first-century Corinth and Paul’s ministry to the Corinthians. (MLOs: B, E)

Research Paper Assignment

The student will write a 3000–4500-word research-oriented paper in the current Turabian format that focuses on a topic related to 1 or 2 Corinthians. The paper must include at least 7 scholarly sources in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. (MLOs: A, B, C, D, E)

Quizzes (4)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the modules: the weeks for which it is assigned. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes; contain 30 multiple-choice, true/false, and short answer questions; and have a 1-hour time limit. Each quiz may be taken twice. The first attempt must be taken before the appropriate deadline. The second attempt may be taken at any point thereafter. (MLOs: A, B, C, D, E)
