Course Description

This course provides an overview of intellectual property law in the United States. Topics include copyright law, trademark law, trade secret law, and patent law. The course will prepare students for understanding these areas of law, the business considerations for deciding when to seek certain kinds of protection, and assessing potential infringement risks.

Rationale

The purpose of this class is to provide an overview of key concepts in intellectual property. The class will explore the nature of the intellectual property, and the application of the rules and regulations that govern intellectual property to private individuals, public bodies, and corporations.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the different kinds of intellectual properties.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of important general principles and cases.
  3. Discuss the current state of intellectual property law in the areas of copyright law, patent law, trademark law, trade secret law, and rights of publicity.
  4. Analyze intellectual property issues in a variety of factual situations and provide a legal assessment.
  5. Apply Christian worldview principles to intellectual property cases, decisions, and proceedings.

Discussions (3)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided promptly. Each thread must be at least 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. At least 3 sources must be cited in the thread. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to at least 2 classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 200 words. At least 1 source must be cited in each reply. All sources used to support your assertions must be cited in the current Bluebook format.

Research Paper Assignments (2)

For each paper, the student is required to write a substantive paper of 57 pages that demonstrate course-related knowledge. Each paper must be double-spaced and in current Bluebook format and cite at least 5 sources. The paper must be formatted in accordance with the Bluebook sample paper for PLST and JURI class essays.

Quizzes (3)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned Module: Week. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 20 multiple-choice and short answer questions, and have a time limit of 2 hours 30 minutes.
