Course Description Summary:

A survey of corporate securities, financial securities, security markets, investment, and portfolio analysis, and administration. Investment companies, commodity markets and the stock exchange are also examined.

Rationale:

This course provides the student with a solid foundation in core concepts, tools, and technologies needed to make informed investment decisions throughout his or her personal and professional life.

Measurable Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

• Exhibit the ability to calculate, interpret, and apply financial ratios for publically traded corporations in order to evaluate potential investment opportunities (Program Learning Objective 2, 3, 4; Emphasized).
• Demonstrate time value of money, holding period return, and other financial calculations related to investment portfolio valuations and to the valuation of publicly traded corporations (Program Learning Objective 2; Emphasized).

Course Requirements Checklist

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

All Discussion Sessions:

Each student will complete one discussion in this class. The opening thread must be 500–750 words and include at least three outside scholarly sources (e.g., finance-related, peer-reviewed journal articles, etc.). Citations from the course textbook should be avoided and will not count as one of the required sources. The student will integrate the biblical/Christian worldview into the body of the initial post. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to one classmate’s thread. Each reply must be 300–500 words and include at least two scholarly citations. The discussion must follow the current APA format (including in-text citations and a reference list).

1. The student will complete three Textbook Assignments during this course.
2. Each of these assignments will consist of one or more comprehensive problems.
3. Two of the textbook assignments will be completed in Connect.
4. The other textbook assignment will be completed using MS Excel and will be submitted in Canvas.
5. Each textbook assignment is to be completed independently by each student.

The student will take four bi-weekly online quizzes through Connect. The quizzes will consist of questions drawn from the quiz bank and from previous Connect Homework problems. It will behoove the student to be intentional in taking good notes and in building spreadsheet solutions for the Connect homework problems that he or she finds to be more difficult and/or time-consuming to complete.
