  • The course provides you with an overview of a variety of financial planning topics with a special emphasis on retirement planning.
  • The purpose of the course is to provide you with a foundation for subsequent course work in the CFP® program and to prepare you to take the national CFP® examination to become a Certified Financial Planner.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the importance of the time value of money in financial and retirement planning.
  • Identify the processes for helping clients achieve their financial goals.
  • Identify strengths and weaknesses in a client’s initial situation while determining solutions for these weaknesses.
  • Explain what Scripture says about the role of money and possessions in the life of a Christian.

Course Characterization

Textbook Readings, Lecture Presentations/Notes, and Articles

  • Information contained in chapters 5, 9, and 12 – 14 is covered in detail in other financial planning courses.  While these chapters will not be tested in this course, students are highly encouraged to read them.
  • There are six presentations in this course that add insight to the week’s required reading.
  • There are two articles that offer insight into the financial planning profession.

Complete Discussion (4)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, there will be four discussions throughout this course. You will participate in response to the provided topic by submitting a 400-word thread demonstrating course-related and biblical knowledge to each of the instructor’s prompts. Each thread is supported by at least two citations from current academic journals. The week after each thread, you will reply to at least two other classmates’ initial threads. Each reply is at least 200 words and has at least one citation from current academic journals.

Entire Quizzes (9)

  • There are six short quizzes, two Quizzes: Assessments, and one Quiz: Case Study in this course.
  • Each short quiz contains 15 multiple-choice and true/false questions and has a time limit of 40 minutes. The larger Quiz: Assessments consist of 75 multiple-choice and true/false questions, and have a two (2) hour time limit. The Quiz: Case Study consists of nine financial planning questions and has no time limit.
  • The Quiz: Midterm Assessment covers the Learn materials assigned during Module 1: Week 1 through Module 4: Week 4.
  • The Quiz: Final Assessment covers the Learn materials assigned during Module 1: Week 1 through Module 8: Week 8.
