Course Characterization

This course explores the ethical and legal implications of the digitalization of data, information, and communications on organizations and society. These areas are examined in regard to information privacy, accessibility, property rights, and accuracy. The proliferation of computer crime and its ramifications as well as the legal and regulatory environment will be examined. The course will also look at the impact of globalization, sourcing, technology, workforce, and the digital divide. For information regarding prerequisites for this course, please refer to the Academic Course Catalog.

Rationale:

This is a new course development for the core curriculum of the new MSIS program. In today’s global business paradigm, it is a requirement that leaders in information systems understand the complex legal issues of eCommerce. We must further understand how to solve these issues from a Christian worldview perspective.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

    • Integrate biblical principles within the field of business technology, as it pertains to various legal issues.
    • Illustrate an ethical understanding of the legal issues pertaining to technology including tort, contract, and intellectual property law.
    • Examine emergent statutory and case law as it pertains to information technology practices in business.
    • Analyze organizational responsibility to enact government regulation, compliance, privacy, and liability affecting information systems.
    • Assess ethical problems associated with technology and business from a legal perspective.
    • Develop a level of competency in cybercrime for rudimentary business consultation.

During each Module: Week the student will write a paper in the current APA format that focuses on 2 case studies from each Module: Week’s reading. Each paper must include at least 4 references in addition to the course textbook and the Bible.

Final Project Assignment

The student will write a research-based paper in the current APA format that focuses on a scenario where the student is a consultant helping a company navigate the legal issues of eCommerce. The paper must include at least 15 references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible.

Midterm Exam

The exam will cover the Learn material from Module: Week 1 – Module: Week 4.

Final Exam

The exam will cover the Learn material from Module: Week 5 – Module: Week 8.
