Rationale

Why study the book of Romans? Romans may be described as the Apostle Paul’s magnum opus. It is a systematic presentation of the Gospel which reveals the righteousness of God. In addition to presenting the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Paul addresses other significant issues relating to first century A.D. Christianity, including the Jew-Gentile relationship, the Christian’s relationship to the Torah, unity in the church, the Christian life, and the Christian relationship to government (just to mention a few).

The book of Romans provides eternal principles that must be applied to contemporary situations. In sum, because of its profound message, its logical presentation of Christian truth (which is foundational to a clear apprehension of the truth imparted in the other Pauline epistles), and its propensity to impact the saved so that their lives will influence the lost for Jesus Christ, it is essential that every Christian study Paul’s letter to the Romans. The primary purpose of this course is to trace the theme of God’s Gospel as presented in the Book of Romans, emphasizing the specific aspect of His revealed righteousness.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Explain the historical situation of the letter to the Romans and articulate how the historical factors impact the reading of Romans.
2. Summarize the argument of Romans as it is developed throughout the letter.
3. Explain the biblical doctrines discussed in Paul’s letter to the Romans (such as the gospel, condemnation, justification, sanctification, the role of Jews, submission to God, and Christian love).
4. Explain selected texts from Romans in a manner that is consistent with the argument of the book.

Discussions (3)

The student will complete three Discussions. For these collaborative Discussions, each thread will be submitted in response to the appropriate prompt. Each thread must be 250 – 300 words, consisting of four to six paragraphs which must include one scholarly source per paragraph. Then, the student will reply to two classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 100 words. The student must be acutely aware of the time sensitivity of these Discussion assignments. (MLOs: B, C, D)

Research Project Assignments (4)

This four-part Research Project highlights the reading and research-driven nature of this course. The student will complete this project in the following order: (1) the student will choose a provided topic on which to write; (2) the student will write a bibliography with a minimum of ten peer-reviewed, scholarly sources in current Turabian format; (3) the student will write a clearly written thesis statement for the project; and (4) the student will compose a nine to ten-page paper based on his/her chosen topic in current Turabian format. Book Review Assignment

The student will write a 750 – 1000-word Book Review Assignment that includes four major components: (1) the complete bibliographical entry; (2) the editors’ information such as education, position, and scholarship; (3) a concise summary or synthesis of the major theme of the book; and (4) an honest and courteous evaluation of the book. Quizzes (4)

The student is required to complete four quizzes. The quizzes will be open-book/open-notes and will consist of 24 to 25 multiple-choice, true/false, and/or essay questions. The quizzes will cover all required Reading & Study material. The student will have one hour to complete each quiz. (MLOs: A, B, C, D)
