Course Description

This course is an introduction to the basic principles of biblical interpretation and hermeneutical procedures. The student will develop the skills to practice a methodical approach to the observation, interpretation, and application of the Scripture across its various genres.

Christians trust that the Bible is the final rule of faith, belief, and practice. An aptitude for Bible study is essential for both life and ministry. Therefore, the ability to properly read, interpret, and apply the Bible is foundational for all. Consequently, the skills taught and the tools used in this course will prepare the student for a rich and enjoyable study of God’s Word.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

    1. Understand the relationship and movement between observation, interpretation, and application as a framework for applied hermeneutics.
    2. Apply a methodical approach to the study of each of the primary genres of the Old and New Testaments.
    3. Identify basic elements of structure within the biblical text.
    4. Demonstrate correct contextual interpretation and application of Scripture.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will create a thread in response to the provided promptly for each discussion. The thread must be at least 400 words and demonstrate a comprehension of the corresponding course reading. In addition to the thread, the student will reply to the threads of at least 2 classmates. Unlocking the Scriptures Project Assignments (3)

Using the Finzel textbook, the student will complete a series of assignments based on a provided template in order to examine specific Bible passages. (MLOs: A, B, C, D)

Methodical Bible Study Assignment

Using the Finzel textbook and the skills practiced in the Unlocking the Scriptures Project, the student will complete a Methodical Bible Study Assignment. The student will use the provided template in order to examine specific Bible passages. (MLOs: A, B, C, D)

Specialized Study Assignment

Using the Finzel textbook and the three components of a Methodical Bible Study, the student will complete a specialized study assignment. The student will use the provided template in order to complete a keyword study or a biographical study. (MLOs: A, B, C, D)

Quizzes (3)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the module: week in which it is assigned, along with the preceding module: week or modules: weeks since any prior quizzes. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 30 multiple-choice and true/false questions, and have a time limit of 50 minutes. The student will be allowed 2 attempts, and the highest score will count toward his or her grade. (MLOs: A, B, C, D)
