Rationale

This course will help the student develop a better understanding of the atmosphere; the aviator’s operating environment. Once the operating environment is understood, the student will then have the knowledge required to maximize aircraft performance, while minimizing exposure to weather hazards.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the fundamentals of aviation weather.
2. Correlate the effects of weather with flight operations.
3. Analyze the availability and usage of aviation weather resources, both in the forecasting arena and also the various sources and products that are available to the pilot in order to conduct safe flight operations.
4. Use the Internet to obtain useful training and operational weather information.
5. Describe the legal requirements of familiarity with en route weather required by the FAA before conducting a flight.
6. Evaluate the real-life ramifications of weather hazards by studying weather-related aircraft accidents.
7. Contemplate scriptures that promote wisdom when safety is paramount during hazardous situations.

Discussions

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete various Discussions in this course. Each student will post an initial thread of 400-500 words on the assigned Module: Week for each Discussion. In addition, the student must then post 2 replies of 250 words on the last day of the same Module: Week. These are intended to be scholarly dialogues and for each thread, the student must support his/her assertions with proper scholarly support in APA format with sources listed as References at the end of the post. AOPA Certificate and Reflection

The student will complete 4 specific AOPA Weather Wise Online Interactive courses. The student will watch video presentations, interact with them, and then take a quiz for each course. Once the student has passed the quiz successfully, a completion certificate will be emailed to him/her from the website. Each certificate will be submitted to the instructor along with a 50-word summary of what the student learned. (MLO: A, B, F)

Case Study

The student will submit a 10–12-page Case Study on a weather-related aircraft accident. Current APA format must be used with a minimum of 5 sources (does not include NTSB report) cited. (MLO: A, B, D, E, F)

Interactive Study Activity

Within each Module: Week, the student will find Interactive Study Activities. These activities are to provide the student with an additional resource to help learn the material covered within this course. The interactive activities will be graded for completion. Each student is HIGHLY encouraged to view the material thoroughly to best prepare for weekly quizzes and course exams. (MLO: A, B, C, G)

Quizzes

The student is required to complete quizzes in this course. The quiz format will be open-book/open-notes and consist of various types of questions. The student will have an assigned time limit to complete each quiz. (MLO: A, B, D, E)
