Course Description
The focus of this course is how an aviator can promote effective and safe aviation operations by developing and employing sound human factors leadership principles. Crew resource management, threat and error management, and safety management system concepts and programs will be evaluated against actual situations and aircraft accident case studies to help students develop their analytic and evaluative skills. Students will also learn their own personal strengths and how those strengths relate to human factors elements that contribute to effective aviation teams and an organizational culture that promotes safe mission accomplishment.

Rationale
The course provides discussion, critical analysis, and application of human factors leadership principles for the purpose of guiding students in gaining an understanding of how to develop into effective and safe aviation leaders, and how to effectively promote an ethical, safe, and effective aviation organizational culture.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

- Summarize the meaning and application of authority, responsibility, and accountability (ARA) in professional aviation roles and relate ARA to the concept of just culture.

- Discuss how to exercise sound and effective airmanship, flight discipline, and aeronautical decision-making in various professional aviation situations.
- Explain how an effective Safety Management System contributes to effective and safe operations.
- Describe how leadership principles relate to effective Crew Resource Management and Threat and Error Management for safe flight operations.

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.
Class Introduction Discussion
The student will submit a 2–3 minute video presentation introducing themselves to their fellow classmates. Specific elements described in the assignment are to be included. This will be a graded assignment and you must reply to at least two other classmates’ introductions as well.
The student will complete various Discussions in this course. Each student will post an initial thread of a specified word count and then post 2 replies. These discussions are intended to be study guides and reflection opportunities.
Quizzes
Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned Module: Weeks. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes and have a 1-hour and 30-minute time limit.
Service Project Assignments
Each student will plan, implement, and present a service project demonstrating leadership traits and objectives learned within this course while leading others to accomplish the project goals.
Service Project Plan Assignment
The student will prepare a 1-2 page paper (utilizing the template provided) presenting specific elements of the chosen service project. The service project must be approved by the instructor before implementation.
Service Project Presentation Assignment
The student will prepare a 4-6 minute visual and audio presentation (narrated PowerPoint) regarding the chosen, approved, and implemented service project.
